Is DC Absolute Line Worth Reading?

DC Absolute

With the release of the second wave of DC Comics’ Absolute Universe, fans are starting to ask: Is it really worth reading? The short answer? Absolutely yes. Whether you’re a lifelong DC fan or just getting into comics, this new line offers bold reinventions, emotional storytelling, and visually stunning artwork that make it one of the most exciting things happening in comics right now.

What Is the DC Absolute Universe?

The Absolute line was born from the events of Absolute Power an DC ALL IN SPECIAL. With rise of the new Justice League Unlimited. But when Darkseid creates a new Earth, he reshapes it into a bleaker, more twisted version of the world we know—a world where hope itself is the underdog, and the heroes we thought we knew are changed at their core.

Here are some of the standout reinterpretations and the first three tittles:

  • Absolute Batman (Scott Snyder): Bruce Wayne is no longer a billionaire. His mother is alive. He’s more violent, and his Batmobile is now a truck(?).
  • Absolute Superman (Jason Aaron): Kal-El survives Krypton’s destruction but isn’t raised by the Kents, creating a completely different Superman experience; Desspite de similarities with Kara.
  • Absolute Wonder Woman (Kelly Thompson): Diana is the last Amazon, raised in Hell by her enemy, Circe. Think dark fantasy meets mythic legend.

Each story explores darker and more emotionally charged themes while remaining respectful to the character’s core.

Is It Worth Reading?

Definitely. What makes the Absolute line so compelling is that it doesn’t feel like just another alternate universe. The creative teams are using this opportunity to craft new mythologies, break classic tropes, and push storytelling boundaries—visually and narratively.

The comics don’t just remix origin stories—they dive deep into character psychology, existential themes, and the cost of heroism in a world stacked against hope. Even if you’re not typically into superhero books, the mature tone and high concept themes make this line accessible to new readers.

What’s Missing?

If there’s a critique to make, it’s the lack of strong interconnectivity—at least for now. Despite being teased as a unified world in DC All In (2024), several intriguing elements have yet to be revisited. We haven’t seen any follow-up on Booster Gold or the Legion of Darkseid, both of whom played key roles in the Absolute universe’s setup. While we didn’t necessarily expect crossovers this early, the absence of those characters makes the world feel a bit fragmented at times.

Fortunately, DC has confirmed that the first year is focused on standalone arcs, and crossover events are coming soon. This slow-burn world-building could ultimately pay off in a more satisfying, organic way.

My personal ranking of the 6 Absolute DC Titles So Far (SPOILERS)

Ranking the 6 Absolute DC Titles So Far (Spoiler-Lite)

Here’s how we rank the current titles in terms of innovation, storytelling, and impact:

6. Absolute Green Lantern

A cosmic horror debut steeped in mystery. Despite its potential and Al Ewing’s Lovecraftian flavor, the supposed protagonist Jo barely appears. Hal takes center stage, leading to confusion about the narrative focus. Still, the transformation into Black Hand sets up an exciting direction.

5. Absolute Batman

Still a solid story with a more brutal Bruce Wayne. But aside from losing his fortune, not much has changed. Fun, yes—but not as daring as the rest.

4. Absolute Flash

A compelling reinvention of Wally West with no Speed Force, no Barry, and no legacy. He’s alone—and broken. This issue sets up major emotional stakes and mirrors Hal Jordan’s own guilt arc in Absolute Green Lantern, drawing an intriguing thematic parallel.

3. Absolute Wonder Woman

Diana rides a Pegasus, wields a massive sword, and commands the page like a mythic warrior. The tone feels like an ancient epic. Her dynamic with Circe adds a brilliant magical contrast.

2. Absolute Superman

Initially slow, but issue #6 takes the series to another level. Jason Aaron captures Superman’s heart while exploring existential stakes. Kal-El tries to save a planet echoing Krypton’s fall, making this run both timely and timeless.

1. Absolute Martian Manhunter

A stunning, noir-style thriller with psychedelic visuals by Javier Rodríguez. Deniz Camp’s writing is emotionally rich and layered with mystery. The use of print comics as a medium has never felt so creative—one of the most fun and mind-bending finales in my recent memory.
