Absolute Martian Manhunter #1 Weridest in the Absolute Universe
Absolute Martian Manhunter #1: A Noir-Inspired Reinvention of J’onn J’onzz

’ll admit it—before picking up Absolute Martian Manhunter #1, I wasn’t familiar with the character. This is my first time reading a story about J’onn J’onzz, so I can’t compare it to his main universe version. However, I can confidently say that this comic is incredible for newcomers and offers a unique take that even non-superhero fans might love.
A Perfect Entry Point with a Unique Tone
Unlike traditional superhero stories, Absolute Martian Manhunter has a strong noir vibe, blending detective fiction with sci-fi mystery. The stunning artwork by Javier Rodríguez enhances this tone with a mix of dark, moody aesthetics and psychedelic colors, creating an eerie yet captivating atmosphere. Some pages even remind me of Jack Kirby’s cosmic and surreal designs, making this comic visually distinct from anything else on the shelves.
A Gripping Story of Identity and Fear

“Why do people do the things they do?”
The plot follows an FBI agent who, after a mysterious accident, finds himself in a mind-bending existential crisis. From my point of view (though I’m not sure yet), he is either being possessed by a Martian or starting to remember that he is the Martian himself. This premise keeps the reader questioning reality alongside the protagonist, making the mystery all the more immersive.
One of the most fascinating elements is how the character experiences the world. He is deeply annoyed and even frightened by the “smoke” that surrounds people—a manifestation of their emotions, which seems to be linked to his empathic and telepathic abilities. This aspect is actually similar to the Martian Manhunter in the main DC Universe, where his telepathy allows him to sense thoughts and emotions. Seeing this ability represented in such a psychological, almost horror-like way is a brilliant storytelling choice.

A Truly Unforgettable Reading Experience
Reading Absolute Martian Manhunter #1 in physical format is an absolutely amazing experience. The comic fully explores and exploits the physical medium, making the reading process as immersive as the story itself. The layouts, paneling, and use of colors enhance the noir and psychological thriller atmosphere in a way that digital just can’t replicate. And the final pages? Easily one of the most fun and engaging endings I’ve ever experienced in a comic. So please go to your favorite comic store and get one copy.

A Must-Read for Mystery and Sci-Fi Fans
Even if you’ve never read a Martian Manhunter comic before (like me), this book is worth checking out. Its noir-detective style, psychological depth, and jaw-dropping artwork make it stand out—not just within superhero comics, but in storytelling in general. Whether you’re a longtime DC fan or a newcomer looking for something fresh, Absolute Martian Manhunter #1 is a must-read. I’m beyond excited to see where the next issue takes this story!
