Absolute Green Lantern #1: A Terrific Reinvention

Absolute Green Lantern #1

Absolute Green Lantern #1, written by Al Ewing and Jahnoy Lindsay, delivers a new vision of the Green Lantern.

A Mystery Wrapped in Green Light

This issue blends sci-fi and horror to reshape Green Lantern’s mythos. A key surprise is Abin Sur’s return, linked to a giant Green Lantern in Evergreen, Nevada—an event that triggers the unfolding mystery. Hal feels immense guilt over what happened, believing the incident is his fault. This reminds me of Absolute Flash, where Wally grapples with guilt over Barry’s fate, drawing a strong connection between these Absolute titles. Both stories explore themes of responsibility and the psychological weight of their respective heroes’ actions, deepening the emotional stakes in their journeys

Adding to the intrigue, John Stewart makes a brief appearance, hinting that more Lanterns might be drawn into the mystery. Additionally “Guy” is mentionedby Jo, likely referring to Guy Gardner. With these familiar names in play, it’s clear that Absolute Green Lantern is setting up something massive within the Absolute Universe.

Hal Jordan’s Heroism—and His Dark Fate

Despite the chaos and horror surrounding him, Hal remains true to his heroic nature. When he sees someone in danger, he instinctively acts to save them—only for this very action to seemingly seal his fate. In a shocking twist, Hal seems to transform into Black Hand, a figure long tied to the Green Lantern mythos. This unexpected change plays a pivotal role in altering his fate and ties him to a darker force.

A Cosmic Horror Approach to Green Lantern

Unlike traditional Green Lantern stories this comic leans heavily into cosmic horror drawing inspiration from H.P. Lovecraft. This shift emphasizes the fear of the unknown rather than battles between willpower and fear. Writer Al Ewing is no stranger to this genre—his work on Immortal Hulk for Marvel proved he can deliver Lovecraftian horror at its best.

Looking Ahead: Jo’s Role in the Story

Although Jo is meant to be the protagonist, she barely appears in this issue. What we do know is that she knows “Guy” who was working alongside her. She was also at the incident in Evergreen, along with Hal and John, but she has no idea what happened to Hal after the event. I’m looking forward to the next issue to see how her role unfolds in this story.

Absolute Green Lantern #1

With an eerie atmosphere, and stunning visuals, Absolute Green Lantern #1 is a must-read for Green Lantern lovers. This is a fresh, unsettling take on the Emerald Warrior that promises to redefine his legend in unexpected ways.
